That is pretty neat! I didn’t know they also had a re-badged Trooper. You want to see another weird Honda rebadge ? How about the Honda Crossroad !

True story:
I was 16 and we were in Salt Lake City on a family ski trip, in a rented Isuzu Trooper. We went to a car show in the city and I walked up to this thing at the show. I clearly remember thinking, “WTF is this? It’s a Trooper with an Acura badge for $10k more!”
This was probably the first time I realized that this was A Thing Car Companies Do, namely, slap their badge on someone else’s car to test the market (I guess?) when clearly these companies are not the same, nor necessarily related except in this particular deal . I knew that Acura was related to Honda, Lexus/Toyota, etc. but this was a new one for me.

Really? I though this was common knowledge. Part of the Honda-Isuzu partnership
. Luxo trooper.

Sales were really poor once the high potential for rollover became known by consumers.
I would pass on one just because of the 4l30e. I bet that transmission eats itself when behind the DOHC 3.5

Wait hold on, is this Chevy Forester thing real? Where was it sold???
See an Acura like you posted pretty regularly, and a neighbor has an absolutely mint Trooper of that generation too - otherwise I too would’ve forgotten that either of those vehicles ever existed, especially in the US.

I’ve actually seen one or two of these around town!

What about a full-size Holden sold in Japan with a rotary?

I think it would have to be a fight between that and the Passport, but ultimately I think the Rover Crossroad would win.

That dressed up Isuzu Trooper. I knew a guy who had one. He said he thought it was a pretty good vehicle once the random parts stopped falling off it.

Passports are sweet! And no less reliable than a normal Honda assuming it had a manual trans. Actually, Honda autos are all garbage behind anything with more than 4 cylinders, so par for the course?

Honda missed out on the SUV craze of the early 1990's as the Ford Explorer (and derivatives), Chevy Blazer (and derivatives), Jeep Grand Cherokee, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota 4Runner, Mitsubishi Montero, Isuzu Rodeo and Trooper, etc. all cashed in on the midsize SUV game. Honda had nothing in the arsenal at all except FWD unibody car platforms. In fact, even V6 engines were scarce at Honda in the early ‘90s, with only the Acura NSX and Legend offering them at all.
At the time, GM owned a big chunk of Isuzu, which had abandoned the passenger car market in the US to be a truck-only brand
, but which wasn’t yet ready to give up on passenger cars in its other
markets
.
Isuzu needed passenger cars. Honda needed SUV’s. So GM inked a deal with Honda to give Honda badge-engineered Rodeos and Troopers, while Isuzu got a badge-engineered Odyssey called the Oasis for the US market, and badge-engineered Civics and Accords, called Isuzu Gemini and Aska, for the JDM.

I like Passports, but they were just Rodeos underneath the Honda badge, right?

its still below the max torque limit on that transmission by a healthy margin. I think its just that the 4 l30e isn’t a good transmission. People are putting 6BT cummins in front of the A343F with no mods and no problems with 400 + lbs-ft and they are only spec’d for around 310 lbs-ft.
![]() 03/26/2019 at 16:30 |

It’s not so much that it can’t take the torque.as you pointed out, the transmission sucks. It is prone to countless failures related to sensors and it’s recommended that you change the fluid frequently. Maybe it won't eat itself, but it will likely snack on your wallet

Also, another Isuzu-Acura connection was the fact that the final 5th Generation Isuzu Gemini and the Acura 1.6EL were essentially the exact same car. The front and rear lights, grilles, hoods, front bumpers,
and decklids were identical between the Isuzu and Acura
, with only slight
trim differences.
Meanwhile, the Civic’s front and rear lights, grilles, hoods, front
bumpers,
and decklids were different from the Gemini/1.6EL’s
.

Honda used to have a joint venture agreement with British Leyland/Austin Rover/Rover Group in the 1980s and 90s. The 1981-84 Triumph Acclaim was a rebadged Honda Ballade (Civic sedan). The 1984-88 Rover 200-Series was a rebadged 1984-87 Civic sedan. The 1989-95 Rover 200/400 was a 1988-91 Civic/Concerto rebadge/reskin. The 1987-98 Rover 800 was a reskinned Acura Legend. The 1993-99 Rover 600 was a reskinned Accord. And the 1995-05 Rover 400/45/MG ZS was a reskinned 1996-00 Civic/Domani. T he 1st generation Acura Integra 5-door was also sold in Australia as the Rover 416i.
Honda had to get something out of the deal. So that’s how Honda got a rebadged Land Rover Discovery Series I. And all the reliability issues that came with it.
